The forged alloy steel barrel with integral machined rear and front sight supports is 24" long. The front bead is a Lyman n°31 while the rear sight dovetail is used as a fixing for the low Stith front mount.
The straight comb American walnut (juglans nigra) stock, with well-preserved factory finish and checkering, displays a 13½" LOP on the original Winchester checkered steel butt plate.
This Model 70 is fitted with a vintage Lyman Alaskan [info] "All Weather" 2.5x scope with post-crosshair reticle on a rare and superb Stith Q.E.D ?" mount.
This mythical glass, whose polarized lenses were manufactured by Bausch & Lomb, is one of the best scopes ever made in the USA.
Produced from 1939 to 1957, the Alaskan hit the market just as hunting scopes were becoming popular with the American hunter.
Its superior durability led it to be adopted under numbers M81 and M82 by the American army during the Second World War and in Korea, for the sniper rifles.
All the steel machined metallic parts are blued.
This rifle, in perfect condition, weighs 8lb 5oz without optics and 9lb 5oz scoped.
This is one of the rarest variations of the pre-64 mod.70 and it is now becoming difficult to find such a so well preserved sample.
This Winchester, a fine specimen of "Rifleman's Rifle", runs and shoots perfectly and is covered by our full warranty.
