Rolling Block Creedmoor Long Range
DORLEAC – France
Rifles
Category : D
Caliber : 45-70 GVT
Jean-Philippe DORLÉAC built this Rolling Bock in the spirit of the long-distance shooting rifles used in Long Island Creedmoor Rifle Range at the end of the 19th century.
The system is a rolling block mod.1867/1889 manufactured under license by Husqvarna for the Swedish army. This mechanism of outstanding quality that has been blue printed, significantly modified and fully optimized. The axes were redone to the tightest size, a new trigger and a new firing pin were manufactured, and the cocking geometry was modified in order to get a 3-lb clean let off with a shorter percussion.
The heavy 35¼'' barrel, half round, half octagonal, has been machined from a Lothar Walther match grade raw bar. To enable the shooting of 400 to 500 grains Ø.458'' bullets a 1/18'' twist was selected. The chamber, machined to minimum CIP tolerance, is for the 45-70GVT cartridge and has been proven for modern powder loads when completed.
American walnut (Juglans nigra) was chosen for the woodwork.
The 14¼'' LOP stock features the standards of the period with the typical undulating beaded cheekpiece, elongated grip, straight comb and checkered steel butt plate.
The forearm extends to the transition of the octagon with a long schnabel tip of polished ebony.
To take advantage of the accuracy of that long-range rifle, the sights are high quality MVA (Montana Vintage Arms) and consist of a SOULE No. 103 "Long Range Buffalo" vernier sight and a n°113 Spirit Level front sight.
Before bone and charcoal color case hardening, the action has been beautifully engraved in the style of the period with foliated ornamentation on mat background. The barrel benefits of two gold rings inlaid at the rear end and all markings were hand engraved in the fashion of the epoch.
This magnificent heavy rifle works perfectly and shoots accurately, and with its 11lb 6oz weight, it remains extremely pleasant to use at the stand.
