An outstanding specimen of pre-64 “Super-Grade” mod.70 Winchester rifle (type III, variation 3) chambered for the .300 H&H Magnum Rimless, produced in New Haven in 1957.
This rifle sports an alloy steel 26" long barrel with rear sights boss machined from the blank while the front sight is a Lyman n°31 dovetailed on a brazed n°7 ramp. The front bead lies under factory sliding protector while the rear sight has been replaced by a Marble's protective insert.
The receiver is equipped with a superb period scope, a Weaver K6-C3 (USA Pat: 2949816) Weaver Catalog with plex reticle, a near new condition vintage optics manufactured in El Paso, USA, positioned at the lowest on an original Redfield Junior mount with differentiated Ø 1" rings.
All the parts, the weapon like the accessories and fittings, are machined blued steel.
The stock, with a very light Monte-Carlo comb, bears the cheekpiece typical of the "Super-Grade" versions and the embedded swivel bases specific to the model while its forend is topped with a black buffalo horn-style tip.
The stock, made of shaded in red American walnut (Juglans Nigra), retains perfect checkering; its length, measured on the original Winchester checkered steel butt plate, is 13½".
The original trigger is perfectly tuned for a single stage 2lb 13oz let-off.
Unscoped, Redfield base fitted, that "Super-Grade" W70, weighs 8lb 4oz while equipped with its Weaver scope, it is at 9lb 7oz.
The rifle, with all its original parts, is in new condition and has benefited from an extremely careful restoration. The whole assembly is absolutely superb, its operation remains tight and smooth and its perfect bore delivers astonishing accuracy.
